The Medical Device Industry

The medical device market is one of the largest and most regulated sectors in healthcare. Driven by innovation and new technologies, the sector is a hub for exciting job opportunities that support medical device development, manufacture, procurement, and distribution.

Medical devices relate to all medical technologies designed for disease management, prevention, diagnosis or treatment.

This includes anything from diagnostic consumables and smart wearables to high-powered, robotic machinery. The sector is continuously penetrated by new innovations and advancements built to detect, measure, restore or modify physiological functions or bodily structures.

Within the EU, medical devices are classified into the following categories and are surrounded by various regulatory controls, all of which support and improve health outcomes:

class I medical devices

Class I Medical Devices

These products and goods are considered the lowest risk level within medical devices, which means their regulatory control is general. Products include elastic bandages, dental floss and enema equipment.

class II medical devices

Class IIa/Class IIb Medical Devices

This category involves more complicated equipment which in turn requires more stringent regulations, including general and specialised controls to ensure effectiveness and safety. Class II devices include pregnancy testing kits and powered wheelchairs.

class III medical devices

Class III Medical Devices

These medical devices are the most complex and therefore carry the highest patient risk associated with them. According to the FDA, these products must governed by both general control and also seek pre-market approval. Examples include implantable spinal supports, pacemakers and breast implants.
