What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology is defined, according to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, as a discipline that is primarily concerned with the development of “Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use". Basically, it's a very broad area of biology that involves technology which uses living organisms or systems to develop or make biological products.

Biotechnology offers many overlaps across a multitude of sectors, including; medical and clinical research, agriculture, environmental, food production, cancer research, bio-robotics and defence to name but a few. Biotech is arguably one of the most exciting sectors in science at the moment. Covid-19 has had a massive impact on the industry as the demand for human health products increases due to the pandemic.
